WWE Won't Hold 2026 Draft

WWE is not expected to hold a draft in 2026, breaking from the historical practice of shuffling rosters between Raw, SmackDown, and NXT. The decision signals a new approach to talent movement and storyline development across the company's brands.

The 2026 draft cancellation marks the second consecutive year without the annual roster shake-up; WWE also skipped the event in 2025. This deviates from the post-WrestleMania tradition that has periodically reshaped the Raw and SmackDown rosters since the first brand extension in 2002. Instead of a full-scale draft, WWE has been utilizing storyline-driven transfers and "transfer windows" to move talent between brands. This approach has kept stars like CM Punk and Gunther on Raw, with Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre remaining fixtures on SmackDown through late 2025 and early 2026. The absence of a 2025 draft wasn't due to a lack of interest from broadcast partners. Reports indicated that ESPN was highly interested in hosting the event on its platforms. However, discussions fell through, reportedly because the traditional two-night draft format across Raw and SmackDown did not fit the "Premium Live Event" style presentation that ESPN was seeking. To supplement the main rosters without a draft, WWE has relied on calling up talent from its developmental brand, NXT. Recent call-ups have included Oba Femi, Trick Williams, and Je'Von Evans, injecting new wrestlers into the Raw and SmackDown locker rooms. Historically, the draft has served as a significant reset button for WWE, creating fresh matchups and new storylines. The format has varied over the years, from a lottery-style system to the "Superstar Shake-up," where moves were presented as trades and executive decisions made behind the scenes.
