Bay Area Stamp Fest Underway in San Jose

The Bay Area Stamp Fest kicked off today at Napredak Hall in San Jose. The two-day event, which offers free admission, features stamp art displays and vendors for collectors and enthusiasts.

The event is organized by Stamp Art, a prominent dealer based in Oregon run by Tom and Christi Kinberg. Tom Kinberg, whose family has been involved in philately since his great-grandfather in the 1800s, participates in over 45 stamp shows across the country annually. The Kinbergs started their business in 1998 and have grown it into one of the largest "Floor to Ceiling" dealers in the U.S., known for an extensive stock of both U.S. and worldwide stamps. Napredak Hall, the venue for the festival, has its own unique history. The name "Napredak" is a Yugoslavian word for "progress." The hall was established in 1925 by a group of Yugoslavian friends aiming to preserve Slavic traditions and create a social hub in their new country. While the San Jose Stamp Club hosts its annual "Filatelic Fiesta" at the same venue, the Bay Area Stamp Fest is a separate event that draws dealers from various states, including California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Utah. This provides attendees with a diverse range of stamps, covers, and postcards to browse and purchase. The broader world of stamp collecting, or philately, is experiencing a significant evolution. The global market was valued at approximately $8.5 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $12.3 billion by 2033. This growth is partly driven by a surge in topical collecting—where enthusiasts focus on specific themes like sports, animals, or space exploration—which appeals to a wider audience. Stamps are also increasingly viewed as a tangible alternative investment asset. Market analysts in early 2026 have noted that investment-grade U.S. stamps have outperformed gold in percentage growth over the past 18 months, attracting investors looking to diversify their portfolios. The market is seeing a dynamic shift, with a growing interest in modern rarities and error stamps alongside classic collectibles.
