Big Y Grocery Store Approved in Farmington
The Farmington Planning and Zoning Commission has unanimously approved a project to build a 50,000-square-foot Big Y supermarket at 500 South Road. The decision moves the large-scale grocery store project forward.
- The new supermarket will be constructed on a 6.2-acre portion of the existing Westfarms Mall parking lot. The site plan includes 250 parking spaces and four electric vehicle charging stations, with the infrastructure to add more in the future. - The project has a projected opening in the spring of 2027, with construction expected to take about 10 months after all permits are secured. - Because the Westfarms property straddles the town line, the project required approvals from both Farmington and West Hartford. While Farmington's Planning and Zoning Commission gave the main approval, West Hartford's Town Council will conduct an administrative review for the limited work on parking and landscaping that falls within its jurisdiction. - The land where Westfarms was built in 1974 was formerly farmland known as the Corbin Homestead and later hosted a driving range. More recently, in 2018, a petition was filed for a 2.0-megawatt solar power facility at the same 500 South Road address. - During a public hearing, West Hartford residents raised concerns about potential traffic increases on New Britain Avenue, delivery hours, and light pollution. Big Y representatives stated that building signs would not be internally illuminated and that trash would be compacted during store hours. - This store is part of a broader Connecticut expansion for the Massachusetts-based Big Y, which includes another new location in Orange, also slated to open in spring 2027. The company has over 40 stores in the state.
