M31 Validates 4nm Chip IP, Advances 3nm Development

Silicon IP provider M31 Technology announced it has successfully validated its MIPI M-PHY v5.0 IP on an advanced 4nm process node. The company is now actively developing the IP for 3nm nodes. This progress is intended to enable next-generation UFS 4.1 applications for high-speed data transfer in mobile and automotive systems.

- The MIPI M-PHY v5.0 standard doubles the potential data rate per lane to 23.32 Gbps compared to the previous generation, a crucial advancement for handling the large data streams in modern automotive systems like ADAS and in-vehicle infotainment. - M31's move to 3nm process technology is significant as this node can offer a performance boost of up to 30% and a power reduction of up to 50% compared to the 5nm process. For robotics and autonomous systems, this translates to more powerful onboard AI processing with longer operational times. - Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 4.1, which this IP enables, is increasingly adopted in automotive applications for faster boot times and real-time data access, essential for systems like ADAS and infotainment. - M31 Technology is a key player in the semiconductor IP market, which was valued at USD 5.9 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow, driven by demand from the AI, IoT, and automotive sectors. Other major companies in this space include Arm, Synopsys, and Cadence. - The IP is designed to meet the ISO 26262 functional safety standard, a critical requirement for automotive electronics to ensure the reliability of systems like parking assistance, driver monitoring, and blind-spot detection. - This IP provides the physical layer for the MIPI UniPro v2.0 protocol, which, along with UFS 4.1, creates a standardized, high-speed, and power-efficient interface for connecting processors to flash storage. - The development of IP for advanced nodes like 4nm and 3nm is crucial for enabling the next wave of high-performance, energy-efficient chips required for AI training and inference, autonomous systems, and high-performance computing. - The UFS 4.1 standard supported by this IP introduces features like WriteBooster and enhanced diagnostic capabilities, improving performance and allowing for predictive maintenance of storage in data-intensive automotive environments.
