Fremont Police Launch Teen Safety Site

The Fremont Police Department has launched an educational webpage called "Know Your Stuff!" to engage teenagers in safety topics. The site uses interactive content to educate teens on various safety issues in an accessible format.

The "Know Your Stuff!" webpage's design is intentionally youth-focused, using comic-book-style visuals and Pokémon-inspired elements to make safety information more engaging for teenagers. This approach was a direct response to community feedback requesting that the Fremont Police Department connect with young people in a more welcoming and relevant way. A key feature of the site is the introduction of real School Resource Officers (SROs) from Fremont schools, who are depicted as "Gym Leader" characters in the style of Pokémon cards. Clicking on an officer, such as "Gym Leader Sergeant Hamblin," directs users to the department's official SRO information page, aiming to build familiarity and positive relationships. This online initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Fremont Police to engage with local youth. Another key program is "Building Bridges," which partners with the Fremont Unified School District to teach 6th graders about topics like internet and social media safety, bullying, and pedestrian safety. The need for accessible online safety information was recently highlighted in Fremont. The school district had to issue a warning to families about a resurfacing social media trend known as the "Door Kick Challenge," which encouraged teens to film themselves kicking strangers' doors, posing potential legal and safety risks.
