Xbox Project Helix Console Announced

Microsoft just announced its next-generation Xbox console codenamed "Project Helix" — and it'll play both Xbox and PC games natively. The move signals a major push for cross-platform compatibility and comes after the appointment of Asha Sharna as the new Microsoft Gaming CEO. This follows recent speculation about Xbox's future direction in the console space.

The "Project Helix" codename follows a long tradition for Microsoft's gaming hardware. Previous consoles were developed under names like "Xenon" (Xbox 360), "Durango" (Xbox One), and "Project Scorpio" (Xbox One X) before their official branding was revealed. The concept of merging PC and console gaming builds on Microsoft's "Xbox Play Anywhere" initiative, which launched in 2016. That program allows gamers to buy a digital title once and play it on both Xbox and Windows PC, with game saves and progress synced across both platforms. This announcement is the first major move from new Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharna, who took over in February 2026. Sharna's background is not in gaming but in artificial intelligence and operations, having previously led Microsoft's CoreAI division and held COO roles at Instacart and Porch. Sharna's appointment was a surprise to many, as she succeeded Phil Spencer, who retired after a nearly four-decade career at Microsoft and became the face of the Xbox brand. The leadership change came amid intense competition and slowing revenue growth in the console market. Speculation suggests Project Helix could be the most open Xbox console ever, with some insiders reporting it may run a version of Windows. This could potentially allow access to other PC game storefronts like Steam or the Epic Games Store, a significant departure from the traditionally closed console ecosystem. While Microsoft has not given a release date, chip manufacturer AMD indicated it is developing a chip for the console to support a launch in 2027. More details about Project Helix may be shared at the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC).
