McIlroy’s business moves

Rory McIlroy is a partner with Tiger Woods and Mike McCarley in TMRW Sports, and his investments include TGL as a prominent project. (sportpreferred.com). He’s also been testing new TaylorMade irons in TGL settings, indicating the league is doubling as a live equipment testbed. (golfpost.com)

Rory McIlroy’s business push is no side project: he co-founded TMRW Sports, and its golf league TGL has become the clearest window into how he is investing beyond prize money. (tmrwsportsgroup.com) TMRW Sports lists McIlroy as a co-founder alongside Tiger Woods, with former National Broadcasting Company Sports executive Mike McCarley as founder and chief executive. The company says McIlroy’s separate investment vehicle, Symphony Ventures, holds stakes in golf and fitness businesses including Puttery, GolfPass, Golf Genius, Golf+, Troon Golf, Hyperice and Whoop. (tmrwsportsgroup.com) TGL is TMRW Sports’ first major product, built with the Professional Golfers’ Association Tour as a tech-heavy, team golf league staged at SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. ESPN’s 2024 schedule announcement said the league opened on January 7, 2025, with 15 regular-season matches and a SoFi Cup finals series in March. (espnpressroom.com) By March 2026, TGL had finished its second season, with the league’s official site saying Los Angeles Golf Club beat Jupiter Links Golf Club to win the 2026 SoFi Cup. ESPN reported that season two began on December 28, 2025 and ran through March 2026. (tglgolf.com, espn.com) The format shows what McIlroy and his partners are selling: two-hour matches, six teams of four Professional Golfers’ Association Tour players, a 40-second shot clock and play inside a purpose-built arena. ESPN said players hit from real grass and sand into a simulator screen, then finish on a green whose slopes can be changed mechanically. (espn.com, espnpressroom.com) The business around that concept has kept expanding. In June 2024, TMRW Sports said it closed a Series A round co-led by Dynasty Equity and Connect Ventures, and in March 2026 the company announced a new professional flag football league in partnership with the National Football League. (businesswire.com, tmrwsportsgroup.com) McIlroy has also used the league as a place to test gear in public. Golf Post reported that before Boston Common Golf Club’s early-2026 TGL opener, McIlroy said he was “testing a new set of irons,” then played with TaylorMade P7CB irons from 4 through 9. (golfpost.com) That matters for sponsors and equipment makers because TGL is not a practice range hidden from view. It is a televised competition on ESPN, inside an arena built for close-up viewing, which gives club changes and ball-flight tweaks a live audience. (espnpressroom.com, espn.com) So McIlroy’s role now runs on two tracks at once: he is still one of golf’s biggest players, and he is helping build leagues, media products and sponsor inventory around the sport. TGL is where those tracks meet most visibly, with McIlroy both on the screen and in the ownership group behind it. (tmrwsportsgroup.com, tglgolf.com)
