Sweden Offers Year-Long Island Stay

Sweden launched a national contest offering the chance to spend an entire year on a private island. The off-the-grid adventure aims to attract participants interested in isolation and sustainability living.

- The "Your Swedish Island" initiative is a partnership between Visit Sweden and the Swedish National Property Board. - Winners receive the title of "Official Guardian of the Island" for one year, which includes the right to use the island for activities like camping and swimming, but does not grant ownership. - The prize includes a travel voucher for two people to travel to Sweden, and the winners will also receive a diploma to certify their role as island custodians. - Applicants, who must be over 18, are required to submit a one-minute video explaining why they should be selected, with the jury looking for creativity and a passion for nature. - A key rule of the contest is the exclusion of billionaires, as the campaign aims to redefine luxury as simplicity, silence, and a connection to nature rather than material wealth. - The five available islands are Medbådan, Flisan, Storberget, Tjuvholmen, and Marsten, all of which are uninhabited. - The winners will not have exclusive access to their islands due to Sweden's "Right of Public Access" (Allemansrätten), which allows the public to move freely through nature. - As custodians, winners are expected to respect wildlife, practice a "leave no trace" philosophy, and may be asked to participate in promotional activities for Visit Sweden.
