Venice Exhibition Tackles Overtourism

US artist Hernan Bas is set to open a major new exhibition in Venice directly addressing mass tourism and its impact on the city's cultural identity. The show promises both striking visuals and thought-provoking reflection on how iconic destinations balance cultural vibrancy with the challenges of being global travel magnets. This exhibition is expected to add depth to ongoing policy discussions about protecting Venice's character while welcoming international visitors.

- The exhibition, titled "Hernan Bas: The Visitors," will be held at the Ca' Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art and will feature more than 30 new paintings in an immersive installation. Some of the works were created by the artist during a residency in the city. - Bas's paintings depict young people who represent cliches of contemporary tourists, particularly North American and European visitors. The artwork explores the absurdity of "bucket list" attractions and even "dark tourism" destinations like Chernobyl and Alcatraz. - The city's resident population has fallen to below 50,000, while it grapples with the impact of an estimated 30 million annual visitors. This imbalance has led to a shortage of long-term housing and a decline in businesses serving local residents. - A significant portion of the crowd, approximately two-thirds of all visitors, are day-trippers who contribute comparatively little to the local economy. - In response to the overwhelming numbers, Venetian authorities implemented a trial entry fee for day tourists in 2024 and announced plans to double it to €10 in 2025 for those who book with short notice. - This follows a 2021 ban preventing large cruise ships from entering the historic Giudecca Canal, a decision made after UNESCO threatened to place Venice on its "in danger" list. - Bas is not the only artist to critique the city's tourism crisis; others, including Banksy, have also created works addressing the negative impacts of the industry on Venice.
