Iran Conflict Explodes After Leader's Assassination
The Middle East is on a war footing after the US-Israeli assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In a major escalation, Iran unleashed a barrage of missiles at Israel and Gulf Arab states, killing three American service members. The assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was part of a coordinated campaign codenamed "Operation Roaring Lion" by Israel and "Operation Epic Fury" by the United States. The initial wave involved approximately 200 Israeli fighter jets striking 500 targets in western and central Iran, focusing on air defense systems and missile launchers to establish air superiority.
