Van der Poel Claims First Omloop Victory

Mathieu van der Poel claimed his first career victory in the men's Omloop het Nieuwsblad, while Demi Vollering triumphed in the women's event. The European cycling season kicked off with both Dutch riders cementing their status as favorites for upcoming spring classics. Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe's Tim van Dijke reflected on his career-best result: "It was now or never."

Mathieu van der Poel's victory at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad was not just his first in the event, but it was also his debut appearance. The win came less than a month after he secured a record eighth world cyclo-cross title, continuing an already dominant season. He became the first rider in 25 years to win the race on their first attempt. The decisive moment in the men's 207.6km race came on the legendary Muur van Geraardsbergen. Van der Poel launched a solo attack with 16 kilometers remaining, finishing more than 20 seconds ahead of the nearest chasers. His victory was almost derailed earlier by a crash which he skillfully managed to avoid. For Demi Vollering, this victory was a long-awaited triumph after finishing third in 2025 and second in 2022. The European champion's decisive move also came on the Muur, where she and Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney broke away from the peloton before Vollering won the two-up sprint. A crash with 19km to go took pre-race favorite Lotte Kopecky out of contention. Tim van Dijke's second-place finish marked the biggest result of his career. The Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe rider followed van der Poel's initial move with about 40 kilometers to go. Van Dijke later said of the effort to bridge the gap, "It was one of my last bullets and I could feel the effort in my legs: It was all or nothing." This year's race featured a tougher finale with the addition of the Tenbosse and Parikeberg climbs before the iconic duo of the Muur and the Bosberg. Favorable tailwind conditions in the final kilometers likely encouraged the aggressive, attacking style of racing that defined both the men's and women's events. With the "Opening Weekend" complete, the cycling world now looks ahead to the next major spring classics. The upcoming calendar includes prestigious one-day races such as Milan-San Remo on March 21, followed by the Tour of Flanders on April 5 and Paris-Roubaix on April 12.
