Iran-Israel War Escalates Sharply

The Middle East conflict has exploded after the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader, with Iran launching dozens of ballistic missiles at Israel and Gulf Arab states. Israel has responded with renewed airstrikes on Tehran, while the U.S. military confirmed three American troops have been killed in the exchanges. Analysts are calling the direct, tit-for-tat strikes a "seismic event" that pushes the region into uncharted territory.

For over a decade, the conflict between Iran and Israel was a "shadow war," fought through covert operations and proxies. This included targeting Iranian-linked assets and arms shipments in Syria, a campaign Israel called the "war between the wars." This long-running clandestine conflict has included numerous assassinations on Iranian soil blamed on Israel. At least five Iranian nuclear scientists were killed between 2010 and 2020, often by assassins on motorcycles using magnetic bombs. The most prominent was Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, considered the architect of Iran's nuclear program, who was killed in 2020. Cyber warfare has been a key battleground. The Stuxnet computer worm, widely attributed to a joint U.S.-Israeli effort, was discovered in 2010 after it had successfully destroyed centrifuges at Iran's Natanz uranium enrichment facility by causing them to spin out of control. The conflict also extended to the sea, with a series of tit-for-tat attacks on commercial vessels owned by Israeli and Iranian companies. These incidents involved limpet mines and other unattributed strikes, escalating tensions on international waterways. Direct state-on-state attacks began to emerge more openly in 2024. An Israeli airstrike hit an Iranian consulate in Damascus, and Iran retaliated with its first-ever direct drone and missile barrage against Israel. This set the stage for larger military exchanges in 2025, moving the long-simmering conflict out of the shadows.
