The Irish team's qualification marks their return to the World Championships after an eight-year absence. They secured their spot with a dominant 4-0 victory over Wales in the semi-final. Greg Williams played a crucial role in the final against France, scoring both goals in Ireland's 2-1 victory. Goalkeeper Jaime Carr also contributed significantly with several key saves. The team's performance in Chile ensures they will finish the qualifiers in first place with a perfect record. This success will also see them rise to ninth in the world rankings, their highest position since the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Ireland's men's team previously qualified for the World Cup in 1978, 1990, and 2018. Their best result was 12th place in both 1978 and 1990. The team is managed by Raymond Geddis and coached by Mark Tumilty, with Sean Murray as captain. Shane O'Donoghue is the team's top scorer. The Irish Hockey Union was founded in 1893, and the first international field hockey match was played in 1895, with Ireland defeating Wales 3-0. Ireland also won a silver medal at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Next up for the team is the FIH Hockey Nations Cup this summer, followed by the FIH Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium in August. Both the men's and women's teams have qualified for the World Cup.
