HII, Path Robotics to Partner on AI Shipbuilding

HII, America's largest shipbuilder, and Path Robotics, a leader in physical AI, will sign a memorandum of understanding to advance shipbuilding with artificial intelligence. The companies will hold a signing ceremony and demonstration at Path Robotics' headquarters on February 17. The event will feature live welding and assembly demonstrations using physical AI at Path's new innovation center.

- This partnership expands on HII's existing AI initiatives, including a strategic alliance with C3 AI aimed at improving shipyard productivity by 20 percent through optimized work schedules and resource allocation. - The collaboration aligns with a major U.S. Navy priority to modernize the maritime industrial base, underscored by the Navy's recent $448 million investment in a "Shipbuilding Operating System" with Palantir to accelerate AI and autonomy in shipbuilding. - Path Robotics' technology specifically targets the shortage of skilled welders by using AI to automate complex fabrication tasks in environments like shipyards, where traditional automation has previously been unsuccessful. - HII is concurrently investing heavily in advanced manufacturing, including a $28 million facility in Hampton, Virginia, for 3D printing and the implementation of "Integrated Digital Shipbuilding" (iDS) to build the first paperless aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise (CVN 80). - The company's focus on technology integration is a core part of its growth strategy, with management targeting a 15% increase in shipbuilding throughput for 2026, building on a 14% increase in 2025. - This move is part of a larger pattern of HII partnering with tech firms to enhance its capabilities, which includes previous collaborations with Shield AI for AI-piloted aircraft and developing the AI-enabled ROMULUS unmanned surface vessel. - The Department of Defense's 2023 AI Adoption Strategy explicitly seeks to accelerate the integration of advanced capabilities from industry to achieve "decision advantage," creating opportunities for tech-defense partnerships like this one. - HII's Mission Technologies division, which focuses on unmanned systems, AI/ML, and C6ISR, surpassed $3 billion in revenue in 2025 and recently secured a spot on a 10-year, $25.4 billion Advanced Technology Support Program V (ATSP5) contract.
