BYD Unveils Next-Gen Super-Fast Battery

Chinese automaker BYD just unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery, capable of charging from 10-70% in just five minutes, even in freezing temperatures. The new battery boosts vehicle range to over 1,000 km and comes with a lifetime warranty. It's set to roll out in 10 new models, including the high-end Yangwang U7, escalating the EV tech race.

BYD's advantage stems from its deep vertical integration; the company manufactures approximately 75% of its vehicle components in-house. This includes not just the Blade Batteries, but also electric motors, power electronics, and even semiconductors, insulating it from the supply chain volatility that affects rivals. This control over production is a key reason it surpassed Tesla in global EV sales in the fourth quarter of 2023. The first-generation Blade Battery, introduced in 2020, was already a significant innovation. It utilizes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which is cobalt-free, and features long, flat cells arranged directly in the pack, eliminating modules. This "cell-to-pack" design increases space utilization by over 50%, enhancing energy density and structural rigidity. The second-generation battery improves upon this by boosting energy density by another 5%. It achieves this by upgrading the chemistry to Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate (LMFP), which increases the voltage, and incorporating a silicon-carbon anode. This allows for a range of over 1,000 km (621 miles) in models like the Yangwang U7 and Denza Z9GT. To support the new battery's rapid charging, BYD is deploying a new generation of "Flash" charging stations. These stations, equipped with a 1,500kW capability, can charge the battery from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. The company plans to build 20,000 of these stations across China, with a global rollout to follow. The flagship Yangwang U7, one of the first recipients of the new battery, is a high-performance luxury sedan. It features a quad-motor system delivering over 1,300 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. The updated version will pair the new 150 kWh Blade Battery with this powertrain for its 1,006 km range. While BYD advertises a "lifetime warranty," this specifically covers the battery cells against defects. The broader warranty for the battery pack in Europe is eight years or 250,000 km (about 155,000 miles), with a guaranteed minimum 70% state of health. This is an increase from a previous 150,000 km limit and applies to both new and existing owners. Despite its technological advancements and sales growth, BYD faces intense competition in its home market. In early 2026, domestic sales saw a significant year-over-year decline, with rivals like Geely, Leapmotor, and Xiaomi posting strong gains. This domestic pressure is a key driver for BYD's aggressive international expansion.
