Observers say observability is moving from uptime and debugging into an auditable record of what agents decided and why, meaning traces must capture policy checks, tool use and decision paths. Observability is being recast as an audit trail for artificial intelligence agents, not just a way to watch uptime, latency, and errors. (thenewstack.io) In software operations, observability means collecting traces, logs, and metrics so engineers can reconstruct what a system did. For agent systems, OpenTelemetry said in March 2025 that the same telemetry also has to capture reasoning steps, tool calls, and context because agent behavior is non-deterministic. HPE OpsRamp software executive Gopal Vogety said observability platforms are becoming auditing platforms that show both high-level outcomes and low-level technical details. Cisco said Galileo adds real-time observability and guardrails for multi-agent systems across the agent development lifecycle and will strengthen Splunk Observability Cloud. In that framing, Galileo tracks what an agent did, while Astrix focuses on non-human identities such as service accounts, application programming interface keys, software as a service integrations, and agents with broad permissions. Instead of only recording response times and failures, agent traces increasingly need policy checks, retrieved context, model choices, tool invocations, and approval steps so a company can explain why an agent acted and whether it stayed inside rules. The company said teams need visibility beyond latency and errors to evaluate hallucinations, bias, security metrics, cost, and usage, and to catch failures before they reach users. In a Sogeti Labs post published April 14, 2026, Thomas van der Meer described a system that takes Azure Advisor and Policy Insights findings, retrieves documentation, inspects Terraform files in GitHub, generates remediation changes, and opens a ready-to-review pull request. His example keeps a human reviewer in the loop, but it turns observability data into the starting point for governed action. It said vendors and frameworks are generating agent telemetry in different formats, and that emerging semantic conventions are meant to make traces portable enough for monitoring, evaluation, and governance across tools.
