Cork Chip Shop Crowned Best
A Cork City fish and chip shop has been crowned "the best in Ireland" by a prominent UK food reviewer, underscoring the ongoing love for classic street fare. The recognition highlights Ireland's enduring fish and chips culture.
The recent crowning of a Cork chip shop as "the best in Ireland" comes from Matt Davies-Binge of the UK-based "The Food Review Club." With over 1.36 million social media followers, the reviewer bestowed the title upon Catch of the Day on Bandon Road after a single visit. This particular recognition was given to a relatively new establishment in a historic location. Catch of the Day took over the premises of the iconic Jackie Lennox's, a beloved Cork institution that closed its doors in October 2024 after 73 years of service. The founder, Jackie Lennox, was a well-known local figure, having been a professional footballer and boxer before opening the chip shop in 1951. The accolade from the UK reviewer is not the only recent honor for a Cork chipper. In March 2023, O'Reilly's Fish and Chips in Glanmire was named "Best Chipper" at the Just Eat takeaway awards. This award was the result of over 35,000 votes from the public, highlighting a different form of recognition from the critic's choice. Cork's fish and chip scene is rich with history and competition. Dino's, another long-standing family-run chain, has been operating in Cork since 1970 when Denis "Dino" Cregan opened the first location on Tower Street. At the same Just Eat awards where O'Reilly's took gold, Dino's in Douglas received the Bronze award for Best Chipper, and Lennox's of MacCurtain Street took home a Silver award in the Best of Munster category.
