Alonso Faces Nerve Damage Risk
Aston Martin is limiting laps for Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll at the Australian Grand Prix due to fears of "permanent nerve damage" from excessive car vibration. Team leaders doubt they'll be able to finish the GP, with Alonso publicly voicing concerns about the 2026 car's impact on driver safety.
The concerns at Aston Martin stem from vibrations originating with the new Honda power unit for the 2026 season. These vibrations are so significant that they are being transmitted through the chassis, leading to both reliability issues and posing a direct health risk to the drivers. Team Principal Adrian Newey has noted that parts such as mirrors and taillights have been falling off the car during testing due to the intensity of the shaking. Fernando Alonso has stated he can't drive more than 25 consecutive laps without risking permanent nerve damage to his hands, while Lance Stroll has set his limit at just 15 laps. Stroll described the sensation as being akin to "electrocute yourself in a chair or something like that," adding that it's "bad for the engine, but also the human inside the car.” Alonso has elaborated that after about 20 minutes, he starts to feel numbness in his hands and feet. While the drivers feel the immediate effects, the primary concern is the potential for long-term health consequences. Alonso noted, "We don't know the consequences either, if you keep driving like that for months." This specific issue is separate from the "porpoising" phenomenon that affected cars in previous seasons, which was primarily an aerodynamic issue causing cars to bounce. The problem has severely hampered Aston Martin's pre-season preparations, leaving them with the fewest laps completed of any team. The team has been forced to consider a strategy of "very heavily restricted" running for the Australian Grand Prix until they can implement a solution to the underlying vibration at its source. Honda has been working on countermeasures, but a complete fix for the fundamental power unit vibration has not yet been found.
