CrossFit Open 26.1 Launches with 300+ Rep Challenge
The 2026 CrossFit Open kicked off with workout 26.1 — a quad-burning, 300+ rep challenge that's testing athletes worldwide. CrossFit legend Rich Froning shared his pacing strategy and breakdown tips for tackling the grueling event.
Workout 26.1 is a 12-minute race against the clock, structured in a pyramid format. Athletes work their way up and then back down a ladder of wall-ball shots (20-30-40-66-40-30-20), interspersed with sets of 18 box jump-overs and medicine ball box step-overs. The CrossFit Open serves as the initial qualifying stage for the CrossFit Games, an annual competition seeking the "Fittest on Earth." Since its inception in 2011, it has grown into one of the largest participatory sporting events globally, with hundreds of thousands of athletes competing in their local gyms and submitting scores online. For the daunting set of 66 wall balls, Froning advises athletes to pre-plan their rep scheme rather than going to failure. He suggests using descending sets (e.g., 11, then 10, then 9 reps) and taking strictly-timed rest—no more than three breaths—before getting back on the ball. To ensure broad participation, multiple versions of the workout are available. While Rx'd men use a 9kg medicine ball and a 24-inch box, the "Scaled" and "Foundations" categories offer lighter weights and lower box heights, making the challenge accessible to a wider range of fitness levels. This three-week online competition is the first hurdle on the path to the CrossFit Games. Athletes who rank high enough on the worldwide leaderboard will earn a spot in the Quarterfinals, the next stage of the competitive season.
