Torrey Pines Trails Bloom

Two scenic hiking trails at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve are showcasing ocean vistas and coastal flower blooms this weekend. The Guy Fleming Trail offers a gentle 0.7-mile loop while Razor Point Trail provides a more moderate 1.4-mile out-and-back experience.

The Torrey Pine (Pinus torreyana) is the rarest pine in North America, growing only in the reserve and on Santa Rosa Island, 175 miles away. The species is listed as critically endangered, with the total native population estimated to be around 3,000 trees. This protected area sits on the ancestral homelands of the Kumeyaay people. The preservation of this land began in 1899 when the San Diego City Council set aside 364 acres. Philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps later donated more land, and the area officially became a state park in 1959. The park's namesake, the Torrey Pine, was named by botanist Charles Christopher Parry in 1850 in honor of his mentor, John Torrey. Before that, Spanish explorers referred to the area as "Punto de Los Arboles" (Point of Trees), using it as a landmark. The reserve's unique coastal habitats, including coastal sage scrub and maritime chaparral, support a variety of wildflowers. Visitors in the spring can often see blooms like the Sea Dahlia, wild heliotrope, and the coastal California poppy. The Torrey pine population has faced significant stress from drought, air pollution, and infestations by the California 5-spined engraver beetle. Between 2006 and 2018, the population in the reserve saw a 12 percent loss of trees. In response to the declining tree numbers, a restoration program was initiated. From 2021 to 2023, over 450 Torrey pine seedlings and hundreds of native shrubs were planted within the reserve to study seedling survival and bolster the population. Recent botanical surveys have highlighted the reserve's importance. In 2023, researchers from the San Diego Natural History Museum added 85 new plant records to the reserve's checklist, an increase of 13.5%, and documented seven rare plant species.
