BookCon’s return to New York drew sold-out crowds on April 18 and 19, but the weekend was also marked by fights over free advance copies. (bookcon.com, yahoo.com) The fan convention came back to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center after its last in-person edition in 2019, with ReedPop announcing the revival in June 2025. Javits listed BookCon 2026 on its April calendar, and ReedPop billed it as a “reimagined” two-day event. (javitscenter.com, rxglobal.com) By the week of the show, all Saturday, Sunday, weekend, VIP and Premium VIP tickets were sold out, and BookCon’s FAQ said no tickets remained. ReedPop also required advance reservations for some panels, autograph sessions, in-booth signings and giveaways, with spots offered first come, first served. (bookcon.com, bookcon.com, bookcon.com) That setup collided with a market that now treats advance reader copies, or ARCs, as both collectibles and online content. Publishers Weekly reported attendee complaints about limited access to coveted galleys and panels, while Variety said demand had been fueled by romantasy, book-to-screen fandoms and TikTok’s BookTok community. (publishersweekly.com, variety.com) Coverage from the floor described both enthusiasm and strain. USA Today reported “wild crowds,” and Mashable previewed a weekend built around panels, signings and a packed show floor at Javits. (usatoday.com, mashable.com) Publishers and booksellers still saw strong traffic. Publishers Weekly said the revived show brought strong sales, even as attendees said crowding and access problems undercut parts of the experience. (publishersweekly.com) ReedPop had built the event around extras beyond signings, including book clubs, workshops, a show-floor app, and Saturday-night events such as a fantasy ball and murder mystery parties. Those additions were part of the organizer’s pitch that the new BookCon would be broader than a line for freebies. (bookcon.com, bookcon.com, bookcon.com) The tension now is whether the convention’s next chapter looks more like a festival or a scarce-drop marketplace. ReedPop is already promoting on-demand video from 2026 panels and selling tickets for BookCon 2027 on April 10 and 11, back at Javits. (bookcon.com, bookcon.com)
