Winnipeg Gets Filipino Cuisine Wave

Winnipeg's Filipino community is one of the oldest and largest in Canada, with immigration beginning before 1950. Filipinos now constitute the city's largest visible minority group at 8.7% of the population, a higher percentage than in any other major Canadian city. This long-standing presence is reflected in the city's linguistic landscape, where Tagalog is the second-most spoken language after English. The community is supported by cultural hubs like the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba and publications such as The Pilipino Express News Magazine. The culinary scene features a mix of traditional and modern establishments. Restaurants like Kalan offer authentic Filipino breakfasts, while Charlee's Restaurant and Lounge creates fusion dishes like a Tocino Burger. Iconic global chain Max's Restaurant, famous for its fried chicken, also has a strong presence in the city. Large-scale events provide a major platform for local food businesses. The annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival showcases more than 20 food vendors, serving classics like isaw and fishball to thousands of attendees. The growth is supported by a strong business ecosystem, including the Manitoba Filipino Business Council, which has been active since 2010. This network aids entrepreneurs like Jacki Wild, who opened Tito Boy, the first Filipino restaurant in the city's south end. Chef Norm Pastorin recently brought the cuisine to a prominent Winnipeg landmark by opening Basta! Filipino Kitchen at The Forks Market. His goal is to introduce classic dishes to a mainstream audience, starting with staples and hoping to encourage diners to try more adventurous fare like dinuguan (blood stew).
