Tourism demand is picky

- Tripadvisor's Summer Travel Index shows U.S. travellers favor East Coast and Florida beach destinations this summer. - The index names Myrtle Beach as the top domestic search and Cancun as the top international pick. - Inland Arizona experiences will need itinerary-ready packaging and partner placements to compete with coastal leisure demand (morningstar.com).

U.S. summer travel searches are clustering around beaches again, with Myrtle Beach leading domestic demand and Cancun holding the top international spot. (tripadvisor.mediaroom.com) Tripadvisor released the 2026 findings on April 22, saying East Coast beach destinations and Florida coastal towns are drawing the strongest interest from U.S. travelers. Its top domestic list includes Myrtle Beach, Ocean City, Key West, Panama City Beach and Clearwater alongside New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, Seattle and Nashville. (tripadvisor.mediaroom.com) On the international side, Cancun ranked No. 1 for the third straight year, followed by Paris and London. Tripadvisor also said the fastest-growing summer searches include Florida coastal towns and Caribbean islands. (tripadvisor.mediaroom.com) That puts inland destinations in a harder fight for the same summer traveler, because the strongest demand is concentrating around easy-to-understand leisure products: beach days, water activities and long-weekend escapes. Tripadvisor tied Myrtle Beach’s lead to family appeal and a mix of water parks, beach activities, cultural attractions and local entertainment. (tripadvisor.mediaroom.com) Arizona is not starting from zero. The Arizona Office of Tourism says the state recorded overnight visitation in 2024 above pre-pandemic 2019 levels, and its tourism industry tracks statewide lodging, airport traffic, park visitation and tax receipts as core demand signals. (tourism.az.gov) The state is also still a large tourism market. Arizona’s tourism office says 2024 brought statewide overnight visitation, direct travel spending, tax revenue and employment tied to travel, giving local operators a big base to sell against even when national summer interest tilts toward coasts. (tourism.az.gov) But Arizona’s official tourism pitch already shows the adjustment inland operators may need to make. Visit Arizona is emphasizing ready-made trip ideas built around specific activities — golf, guide-led wildlife encounters, underground mine tours, camping, museums, arts and culture — instead of relying on a generic desert image. (visitarizona.com) Tripadvisor’s own 2026 Trendcast points in the same direction: travelers are increasingly planning trips around activities and experiences rather than the destination name alone. The company said the report draws on search, booking and behavioral data plus more than one billion reviews and contributions on its platform. (tripadvisor.mediaroom.com) That means inland Arizona sellers have less room to market “Arizona” by itself and more pressure to package bookable days, bundles and partner itineraries that can sit beside a beach trip in a traveler’s comparison set. In a summer when search demand is visibly picky, the places with the clearest plan tend to get the click. (tripadvisor.mediaroom.com)
