Isle of Man Slashes ADHD Wait Times
Manx Care reduced ADHD and autism assessment wait times from over two years to four months through a £4 million investment and new staffing. The healthcare system saw 1,000 children in the past year, demonstrating how targeted funding and process reform can make neurodevelopmental support more accessible. The dramatic improvement highlights the potential for similar reforms in other healthcare systems.
The £4 million investment was part of the CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) Transformation Project, which tackled a waiting list that had swelled to 819 young people. Before the project, some families faced delays of up to two and a half years for neurodiverse assessments as the service was reportedly "overwhelmed" with inquiries. A key process reform was the creation of 'Talk', a new single point of access service for mental health support, delivered in partnership with the charity Isle Listen. This new pathway streamlines access to support, achieving an average time of just six days from referral to assessment and nine days from assessment to starting a treatment plan. Since the launch of the 'Talk' service in June 2025, it has handled 906 referrals; of those, 403 were accepted directly by the service, and 296 were referred onward to CAMHS. Of the original 819 young people on the waiting list, all were contacted, 616 received assessments, and a total of 703 have now either been discharged or are actively receiving treatment. The reduction of wait times to around a year is particularly significant when compared to the UK, where average waits for ADHD assessments can be approximately four years and around two and a half years for autism assessments in some areas. The specific CAMHS waiting list initiative concluded in January 2026, but the reformed service and the 'Talk' pathway continue to operate.
