OpenAI Workspace Agents

OpenAI has added workspace agents to ChatGPT, turning AI helpers into shared team tools that can keep working across company systems in the cloud. (openai.com) OpenAI announced the feature on April 22, 2026 and said it is rolling out over the next few weeks to ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspaces. OpenAI’s Help Center says workspace agents are also supported in Slack and can be created, previewed, published, and shared inside a workspace. (help.openai.com 1) (help.openai.com 2) The company describes the agents as “Codex-powered” systems that can handle repeatable work such as preparing reports, writing code, and drafting follow-up messages. OpenAI says teams can connect them to tools including Slack, Google Drive, Google Calendar, and Microsoft SharePoint. (openai.com) (help.openai.com) A workspace agent is closer to a shared inbox rule or an internal bot than a one-person chatbot. OpenAI says these agents can gather context from connected systems, follow team processes, ask for approval, run on schedules, and continue working when the user is offline. (openai.com) (help.openai.com) That changes where ChatGPT sits inside a company. Instead of each employee building separate prompts and personal GPTs, OpenAI is positioning agents as managed workspace assets with admin controls, role-based access, and logs of tool use. (help.openai.com) (openai.com) OpenAI says GPTs will remain available while customers test workspace agents, and it plans to add a way to convert GPTs into workspace agents. The release follows months of OpenAI pushing Codex as a cloud agent for engineering teams, including a general-availability launch in October 2025 with Slack integration and workspace management tools. (openai.com 1) (openai.com 2) The company is also using the launch to widen ChatGPT’s reach inside larger organizations. OpenAI’s product post says workspace agents are available in research preview for Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans, while its business page pitches them as workflow automation across enterprise tools with governance controls. (openai.com 1) (openai.com 2) For customers, the immediate question is less whether ChatGPT can answer a prompt and more whether it can complete a process. OpenAI’s answer is a shared agent that can live in ChatGPT or Slack, work inside company permissions, and leave an audit trail behind. (help.openai.com) (openai.com)
