Hiker Airlifted After Two Frozen Nights
A lone hiker was airlifted from the Adirondacks High Peaks after surviving two nights in freezing conditions. Search teams braved severe cold and difficult terrain before locating the individual, who was reported missing by their spouse after losing contact during a winter trek. The hiker was extracted by helicopter and taken for medical evaluation.
The multi-day search for the lone hiker, a 58-year-old man from Mechanicville, focused on the remote and rugged Dix Range of the High Peaks. His spouse reported him overdue after he embarked on a planned two-day trek and contact was lost. More than 20 New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forest Rangers participated in the extensive search effort. They were joined by a New York State Police Aviation unit, which proved critical in accessing the high-elevation terrain. Search teams combed the area for approximately 18 hours before locating the man. The rescue operation began on a Wednesday evening and concluded the following afternoon. He was discovered off the Lillian Brook trail, an unmarked path that can be particularly challenging to navigate in winter conditions. Rescuers noted he was exhibiting symptoms of mild hypothermia and frostbite when they reached him.
