Japanese Drama Gets Movie Remake

Japanese drama "1 Litre no Namida" (2005) is getting a 2027 movie remake starring Nishikido Ryo as Haruto Asou — 20 years later. Based on Kito Aya's diary of her degenerative disease, the film will feature Remioromen's "Konayuki" and "March 9th" as themes, generating significant social media buzz with 1,372 likes and 720 reposts.

The original drama is based on the real-life diary of Aya Kito, who was diagnosed with spinocerebellar ataxia at the age of 15. This incurable disease progressively robs the body of motor control, affecting the ability to walk, speak, and eat, while the mind remains intact. Kito documented her experiences in a diary until she could no longer hold a pen, wanting to give hope to others. Aya Kito passed away at the age of 25. Her diary, published before her death, sold over 1.1 million copies in Japan alone, becoming a symbol of courage in the face of immense hardship. Her writing provided a raw, personal account of her physical and emotional struggles, and her determination to live a full life despite her deteriorating condition. The 2005 Fuji TV drama starred Erika Sawajiri as Aya, and the newly announced movie star, Nishikido Ryo, played her romantic interest, Haruto Asou. A special episode aired in 2007, set after Aya's death, which focused on Nishikido's character, Haruto, who had become a doctor working with patients who have the same disease. The songs "Konayuki" and "March 9th" by Remioromen became inextricably linked with the drama's emotional weight. "March 9th," in particular, is a staple at Japanese graduation ceremonies, adding a layer of poignant nostalgia for audiences who grew up with the series.
