Lancaster Teen's Car Goes to Banksy Show
A teenager from Lancaster sold her well-worn Nissan Micra for £400 to an upcoming Banksy exhibition. The deal arose after organizers sought 'everyday objects' to be transformed into art installations, with the Micra's new role highlighting the playful, democratic spirit of street art and Banksy's ongoing dialogue with popular culture.
The 25-year-old Nissan Micra was purchased for "The Mystery of Banksy - A Genius Mind," an unauthorized exhibition in Manchester. The show features approximately 200 reproduced pieces of the artist's work, including graffiti, sculptures, and video installations, and has already toured 36 cities. The car's 17-year-old seller, Matilda River Walden, caught the organizers' attention with a brutally honest online ad. In it, she warned potential buyers, "Look, we're not friends. You're not coming here to have a day out." The silver Micra is central to recreating a Banksy mural that first appeared in London last summer as part of a series of animal-themed artworks. Walden will get to watch as her former car is spray-painted and transformed into the art piece for the exhibition. This isn't the first time a vehicle has played a starring role in a Banksy spectacle. His 2015 "Dismaland" exhibit in Weston-super-Mare featured an armored police riot van, repurposed into a children's slide. The artist's authorized solo show, "Cut & Run," which ran in Glasgow in 2023, also incorporated large-scale installations and authentic artifacts. That exhibition drew over 180,000 visitors and broke attendance records for the gallery. While "The Mystery of Banksy" is not officially authorized by the artist, its use of everyday objects like a teenager's used car aligns with Banksy's long-standing themes of subverting the ordinary and challenging the art market.
