Tesla Wins Approval to Supply Electricity in UK

Tesla Energy Ventures secured a license to provide electricity to households and businesses across England, Wales, and Scotland. The move has sparked political debate in the UK, with opposition figures raising concerns about the reliability of allowing a Musk-controlled company to supply critical infrastructure.

Tesla's move into the UK energy market has been years in the making; they initially secured an electricity generation license in June 2020. The license allows Tesla Energy Ventures to sell electricity directly to homes and businesses across Great Britain. The application underwent a full assessment process between July 2025 and March 2026. Tesla is expected to replicate its Texas-based retail electricity model in the UK. In Texas, Tesla Electric operates as a retail electricity provider offering 100% renewable power to anyone in an eligible area. Customers with Powerwalls can earn credits by exporting stored energy back to the grid. Tesla's entry positions them against established UK energy suppliers like Octopus Energy, British Gas, and EDF. Octopus Energy currently controls about 25% of the UK market. Tesla already has a presence in the British power sector through its electricity generation activities. The license requires Tesla to comply with standard UK electricity market conditions. These include consumer protection, billing transparency, and financial resilience. However, the license does not allow Tesla to offer dual fuel contracts combining electricity and gas. Tesla's UK expansion is supported by significant grid-scale infrastructure, including a 1 GWh Megapack project in Scotland. The company also has a virtual power plant (VPP) network through its partnership with Octopus Energy. Tesla's entry into the UK market could intensify competition among energy suppliers.
