Retail theft is rising

Retail theft and visible security responses have increased recently, with some U.K. stores hiring guards described as “bouncers.” (standard.co.uk) Local U.S. reports show a surge in theft cases—Plymouth Township logged over 200 retail‑theft incidents in Q1—and separate organized‑theft arrests were reported in Alabama and Wisconsin. Retail theft is showing up in store security plans and police blotters on both sides of the Atlantic, from guarded coffee shops in London to a burst of cases in suburban Philadelphia. (standard.co.uk; morethanthecurve.com) Costa Coffee said it added “additional support” at a small number of branches after security reviews, including stores in London and Manchester. The Evening Standard reported guards at some locations after repeated theft concerns. (standard.co.uk) In Plymouth Township, Pennsylvania, police investigated 123 retail-theft cases from January 1 through February 28, then 93 more in March, for more than 200 cases in the first quarter. The department said merchandise tied to the January-February cases was valued at about $78,000, with March cases adding about $17,000 more. (morethanthecurve.com) Police in Decatur, Alabama, said two suspects were charged with organized retail theft after about $629 in Pokémon trading cards were stolen from a GameStop in March. Detectives said the pair were suspected in similar crimes in other North Alabama counties, and both were booked on April 9 on $30,000 bonds. (waaytv.com) In Whitewater, Wisconsin, police said three people were arrested after an April 9 robbery at a Mobil gas station on West Walworth Avenue. Investigators said witnesses and video evidence helped identify a getaway car, and the suspects were jailed on charges that included robbery and retail theft. (whitewaterbanner.com) The broader numbers point in the same direction, though they come from different systems and measure different things. The British Retail Consortium said customer theft losses hit a record £2.2 billion in 2023-24, while violence and abuse against retail workers rose to more than 2,000 incidents a day. (brc.org.uk) In the United States, the National Retail Federation said retailers reported a 93% increase in the average number of shoplifting incidents in 2023 compared with 2019, and a 90% increase in dollar losses from shoplifting over the same period. That survey covered 164 retail brands representing $1.52 trillion in 2023 sales. (nrf.com) Public data can still look mixed in individual places. The Office for National Statistics said there was no statistically significant change in overall theft in the year ending September 2025, while the Standard reported Met Police figures showing recorded shoplifting in London fell 3.4% from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026. (ons.gov.uk; standard.co.uk) Retailers and police are responding with more guards, more cameras, and more public case roundups, even as the numbers vary by city and by how theft is counted. For shoppers, the most visible sign may be the person standing by the door. (standard.co.uk; nrf.com)
