New Fiber Optic Tech for AI Unveiled at MWC

Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable (YOFC) is set to unveil a new Hollow-Core Fibre (HCF) solution at MWC Barcelona. The company says the next-gen tech offers ultra-low latency optical communication, designed specifically to strengthen the global infrastructure required for advanced AI.

Wuhan-based Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable (YOFC) is a major global supplier of optical fiber preforms, fibers, and cables, with a history stretching back to 1988. The company's move into hollow-core fiber (HCF) positions it at the forefront of a significant technological shift in data transmission. Hollow-core technology guides light through an air-filled central channel instead of a solid glass core. This fundamental change allows light to travel nearly at its vacuum speed, approximately 30-50% faster than in traditional silica glass fibers. This speed increase directly translates to a significant reduction in data transmission delay, or latency. The primary advantage of HCF is its ultra-low latency, which is a critical requirement for artificial intelligence. While conventional fiber has a latency of about 5 microseconds per kilometer, hollow-core fiber can reduce that to around 3.46 microseconds. This reduction is crucial for AI applications like training large models and real-time data processing, where every nanosecond counts. Beyond AI data centers, this technology has significant implications for other latency-sensitive sectors. High-frequency financial trading, where algorithms execute trades in fractions of a second, stands to benefit immensely. Other key applications include bolstering the backhaul for 5G and future 6G networks and enabling more responsive cloud and edge computing. The market for next-generation optical fiber, including hollow-core, is projected to grow substantially. One forecast predicts the market will reach over $1 billion by 2031, with a compound annual growth rate of over 25%. This growth is driven by the escalating data demands of AI, the expansion of 5G, and the increasing need for high-speed data transmission across various industries. YOFC has been showcasing its HCF technology, alongside other innovations like 400G/800G optical modules, at major industry events like MWC Barcelona. The company has positioned these advancements as key enablers for the infrastructure required by AI, high-performance computing, and next-generation communication networks.
