Pomona Hosts Classic Car Show and Swap Meet
The Pomona Fairplex is hosting the Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show today. The major event draws enthusiasts from across Southern California to buy, sell, and trade classic cars and auto parts.
This event has a rich history, dating back to 1975 when founder George W. Cross III started it with just a $100 advertising budget. The first swap meet was a surprising success, drawing 4,200 people to the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds. What started as a small gathering for auto enthusiasts has grown into the West Coast's largest classic car show and swap meet. The event now happens seven times a year and boasts over 2,700 vendor spaces and 15 miles of cars and parts for attendees to explore. Each event draws over 30,000 automobile enthusiasts from around the globe to the Pomona Fairplex. This makes it a significant hub for the classic car community, not just in Southern California but internationally. The show features a diverse range of vehicles, with specific corrals for different types of cars, including antique autos, hot rods, Corvettes, Porsches, and Volkswagens. In 1986, a dedicated section for Volkswagen parts and cars was added to the lineup. The event is a family affair, with George Cross bringing his two sons into the business in 1983 to form George Cross & Sons, which still presents the swap meet today. The iconic flyer artwork, a recognizable symbol of the event, was first commissioned from artist Dave Bell in the same year.
