Waterloo Alumnus Named University President
Bill Rosehart, a University of Waterloo alumnus, has been appointed as the university's new president. The selection of Rosehart signals a preference for internal candidates familiar with the university's strategic objectives.
Rosehart's five-year term as the eighth president and vice-chancellor commences on July 1, 2026. He succeeds Vivek Goel, who served as president since 2021 and chose not to seek a second term. Rosehart is a three-time alumnus of the University of Waterloo, holding BASc, MASc, and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering. He also has executive education from Harvard Business School and academic leadership training from Harvard's Graduate School of Education. Prior to this appointment, Rosehart was the Provost and Vice-President, Academic at the University of Guelph since August 1, 2024. He also spent over two decades at the University of Calgary, including as Dean of the Schulich School of Engineering. The University of Waterloo was established in 1957 and has a main campus on 404 hectares (998 acres). The University also operates three satellite campuses and four affiliated university colleges. Former presidents include Feridun Hamdullahpur (2010-2021) and David Johnston (1999-2010), who later served as the 28th Governor-General of Canada.
