Dehua Porcelain Exhibited in Geneva

Over 30 pieces of fine Dehua white porcelain from China debuted in three exhibitions at the Palace of Nations in Geneva. The event aims to promote cultural exchange and industrial cooperation by showcasing the celebrated craftsmanship of the porcelain.

The Geneva event is part of a strategic push to expand the European market for Dehua porcelain, which already represents an industry cluster valued at over 76 billion yuan. A promotion center for "Blanc de Chine • Porcelain from Dehua" was also inaugurated at the event, signaling a long-term vision for trade partnerships and a goal of building a 100-billion-yuan industry. Known in Europe as "Blanc de Chine" (White from China), the porcelain has been exported since the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). Its arrival in the early 18th century heavily influenced European tastes and manufacturing, with famed porcelain works at Meissen and elsewhere creating their own versions. The historic Dehua kilns are now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The porcelain's signature translucent, jade-like quality comes from the high concentration of kaolinite in the local clay, which has a very low iron oxide content. This specific composition allows it to be fired into shades ranging from a warm, creamy ivory in Ming-era pieces to a clearer white in later productions. Contemporary artists and designers are reinterpreting this heritage craft. At the Sino-French Fashion Week in Paris, designer Meng Yueming created five outfits inspired by the porcelain's texture. Meanwhile, artists like Su Xianzhong, a fourth-generation ceramist, are blending traditional techniques with modern aesthetics in experimental new works. The choice of the Palace of Nations as a venue is significant; it's the UN's European headquarters and a hub for international diplomacy that houses over 2,000 works of art. Originally built for the League of Nations, the building is a landmark of 20th-century architecture set in the 46-hectare Ariana Park. Dehua's industry is not just relying on its history; it's integrating technologies like AI-assisted design and 3D printing into its manufacturing chain. The region is also promoting its "Dehua experience" as a global model for copyright and intellectual property protection in the creative industries.
