Logistics Firms Pilot Next-Gen IoT Tracking

WiseTech Global and Hapag-Lloyd have launched a pilot program for IoT container tracking to provide enhanced supply chain visibility through real-time sensor data. In parallel, A.P. Moller–Maersk is expanding its network by establishing the 'Al Maha' shipping route, creating new endpoints and data feeds for logistics platforms.

- The WiseTech Global and Hapag-Lloyd pilot program is designed to process millions of data points daily from IoT devices across Hapag-Lloyd's two million containers. The system uses advanced algorithms to translate raw IoT data into actionable operational intelligence, which can improve delivery time accuracy by up to 75% for end-to-end shipments compared to static schedules. Data is distributed to customers through multiple channels, including CargoWise Cargo Tracker, Container Automation, GLO, INTTRA, and Neo. - Maersk's 'Al Maha' service utilizes seven vessels, each with a nominal capacity of 8,500 TEUs per week, to connect ports across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Egypt, and Morocco. This service replaces the previous ME3 and ME4 services and is designed to enhance schedule reliability and capacity, particularly for petrochemical exports from Saudi Arabia. - The underlying IoT technology for real-time container tracking combines GPS for precise location, cellular networks for data transmission near ports, and satellite communication for remote oceanic areas. Additional sensors can monitor temperature, humidity, shock, and unauthorized door access, with data accessible via cloud platforms and mobile applications. - For platform engineering leaders, resilient API architecture in logistics is crucial to prevent costly downtime during traffic surges. Key design principles include idempotency to avoid duplicate orders, unique request IDs, and comprehensive observability to monitor latency, error rates, and queue depths across microservices. - Large Language Models (LLMs) are being integrated into supply chain platforms to automate up to 80% of manual logistics tasks, such as processing unstructured data from shipping manifests and customs documents. These AI systems can also power chatbots to handle routine customer inquiries, which has been shown to reduce support ticket volumes by 40%. - From a market perspective, WiseTech Global (ASX:WTC) has seen its earnings grow by 15.5% per year over the past 5 years and they are forecast to grow 23.03% annually. Hapag-Lloyd (ETR:HLAG) generated €19.1 billion in revenue in 2024 and recently agreed to acquire ZIM Integrated Shipping Services.
