Switch 2 upgrade debate

Publishers are rolling out free updates that upgrade existing Switch games for the Switch 2 — a YouTube roundup highlights several titles receiving meaningful free enhancements to performance and features (youtube.com) (nintendolife.com). At the same time, creators are voicing concerns about consistency — a cautionary video questions whether some 'enhanced' versions actually deliver reliable performance gains across the board (youtube.com).

Nintendo and other publishers are handing out free Switch 2 patches for older Switch games, but the upgrades do not all change games in the same way. (nintendo.com) Nintendo’s official list says 12 first-party Switch games were slated to get free Switch 2 enhancements on June 5, including Pokémon Scarlet, Pokémon Violet, Super Mario Odyssey, ARMS, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Nintendo says these updates can improve graphics, frame rate, or add features such as GameShare, depending on the game. (nintendo.com) Nintendo is drawing a firm line between those free patches and paid “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” upgrades. Its support pages say the paid upgrade packs add larger enhancements or new modes, and some can be downloaded at no extra cost only through a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. (nintendo.com) That split has turned “enhanced for Switch 2” into a catch-all label. One game might get a cleaner image and steadier frame rate, while another mostly adds GameShare or high dynamic range support, which changes what players should expect from a free update. (nintendo.com) The strongest case for the free-update pitch is Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The Pokémon Company said on June 5, 2025 that both games received improved visual quality and smoother frame rates on Switch 2 at no extra cost, and Digital Foundry later reported the games usually hit a 60-frames-per-second target in docked play. (pokemon.com) (digitalfoundry.net) Nintendo’s own game-by-game notes show a narrower promise for some other titles. Eurogamer’s roundup of Nintendo’s published details says ARMS adds improved image quality, smoother frame rate, and high dynamic range support, while Captain Toad and Super Mario Odyssey pair visual upgrades with GameShare support instead of broad performance claims. (eurogamer.net) That has fed a second wave of testing from creators and players looking beyond marketing labels. Eurogamer reported on June 15, 2025 that fans had already logged performance impressions for more than 350 games on Switch 2, including patched and unpatched titles, and noted that some reports differed from one player to another. (eurogamer.net) Nintendo’s wording leaves room for that variation. Its free-update page says the contents “will differ depending on the game,” while its paid-upgrade page says Switch 2 Edition packs can include visual improvements, new features, or additional game modes that only run on Switch 2. (nintendo.com 1) (nintendo.com 2) So the debate is less about whether free Switch 2 upgrades exist than about what the word “upgrade” now covers. In Nintendo’s own rollout, the same phrase can mean a transformed game like Pokémon Scarlet or a lighter patch that mainly adds display options or sharing features.
