AI firm raises massive seed round

Yann LeCun unveiled AMI Labs, his new AI startup, with $1.03B seed funding for world-model AI systems, backed by Bezos Expeditions.

AMI Labs, founded by Yann LeCun after leaving Meta, aims to build AI systems that truly understand the real world, moving beyond the limitations of current large language models. LeCun believes that today's AI, which predicts the next word or pixel, struggles with real-world reasoning. The company is focused on developing "world models" that create abstract representations of real-world data, enabling AI to reason and plan more effectively in complex environments. AMI Labs will initially target industries that require reliable AI decision-making, such as manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and healthcare. Alexandre LeBrun, former CEO of medical AI startup Nabla, has been appointed as the CEO of AMI Labs. LeCun will serve as the executive chairman. AMI Labs has hubs in Paris, New York, Montreal, and Singapore and is actively recruiting researchers and engineers. The $1.03 billion seed round is considered the largest in Europe and values AMI Labs at $3.5 billion pre-money. Investors include Nvidia, Temasek, Cathay Innovation, Greycroft, Hiro Capital, HV Capital, and SBVA. Bezos Expeditions' investment aligns with Jeff Bezos' increased focus on AI and disruptive technologies.
