Armbian OS Expands RISC-V Support

The latest release of Armbian, a Debian/Ubuntu-based OS for ARM boards, now features Kernel 6.18 LTS and expanded support for RISC-V hardware. The update is relevant for engineers prototyping on open-source hardware, providing a more mature software stack for next-generation embedded systems.

The latest Armbian release, version 26.2, now provides images built with the Linux 6.18 Long-Term Support (LTS) kernel. This kernel version introduces significant performance improvements, including a more efficient memory allocator and better swapping behavior under heavy loads. For networking, it adds support for Accurate Explicit Congestion Notification (AccECN) in TCP for improved throughput. This update broadens support for RISC-V hardware, adding an XFCE desktop environment option for these devices. Newly supported single-board computers (SBCs) in this release include the SpacemiT MusePi Pro, Radxa Rock 4D, and OrangePi RV2. The open and royalty-free nature of the RISC-V instruction set architecture allows for extensive customization, making it a strong candidate for specialized embedded systems in aerospace and automotive applications. Armbian is not an independent Linux distribution but a build framework that creates optimized images based on Debian and Ubuntu. This approach combines the stability and extensive package repositories of these established distributions with custom, optimized kernels for over 200 different single-board computers. Debian is often favored for embedded and industrial deployments requiring long-term stability with minimal changes. For developers, the new release enhances tooling with an updated Armbian Imager that features faster image decompression and improved security through code signing. The underlying build framework provides a cross-compilation toolchain, allowing developers to build system images for ARM and RISC-V architectures on x86 host machines. This flexibility is crucial for creating tailored, high-performance systems for resource-constrained environments.
