Multiple countries warn on US travel

The UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Canada have updated advisories for travel to the U.S. ahead of the 2026 World Cup, citing concerns from political unrest to severe weather risks. Those pre‑event warnings are intended to flag specific safety and logistical issues for inbound fans (nationaltoday.com).

Several U.S. allies have refreshed their travel advice for the United States in recent weeks, adding or updating warnings on protests, gun violence, border crime, weather and World Cup logistics ahead of the June tournament. (gov.uk) The British government says protests in the United States are common and can turn violent, and its latest advice also warns that terrorists are “very likely” to try to carry out attacks in the country. It tells travelers to watch local media, follow curfews or emergency orders, and call 911 in a life-threatening emergency. (gov.uk) Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs still rates the United States at “Normal Precautions,” its lowest security level, but its page for the country was updated on March 2 and says travelers should review security, climate, local laws and insurance before departure. (ireland.ie) France updated its United States alerts on April 7 and entry guidance on March 30. Its advice flags weather alerts, including a late-February winter storm warning, and says new U.S. visa applications now require applicants to state “sex at birth” under a presidential order dated January 20, 2025. (diplomatie.gouv.fr 1) (diplomatie.gouv.fr 2) Canada’s advisory for the United States was updated on April 8 and keeps the overall risk at “Take normal security precautions,” but it singles out gun violence, mass shootings, petty crime in tourist areas and higher criminal activity near the Mexico border in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. (travel.gc.ca) Ottawa has also published a separate World Cup page for Canadians traveling to U.S. host cities, telling fans to book accommodation early, carry copies of travel documents and buy health insurance because private medical care in the United States can be very expensive. (travel.gc.ca) The advice is landing two months before the tournament starts on June 11 and runs through July 19. FIFA says the 2026 event will feature 48 teams and 104 matches across 16 cities in Canada, Mexico and the United States. (fifa.com) The United States will host 78 matches in 11 cities, including the final in the New York New Jersey stadium area, according to the U.S. State Department. That scale means millions of fans will be moving through airports, hotels, downtown transit systems and stadium districts over five weeks. (state.gov) (fifa.com) Not every government is framing the risk the same way. Ireland and Canada both keep their baseline advice at ordinary caution levels, while the British and French pages put more emphasis on protest risk, terrorism alerts, severe weather and fast-changing entry rules. (ireland.ie) (travel.gc.ca) (gov.uk) (diplomatie.gouv.fr) The common message is narrower than a blanket warning against visiting the United States: check the latest entry rules, expect tighter planning around big crowds, and watch local conditions city by city before boarding a flight for the World Cup.
