New AI Tools Automate 2D Animation Coloring

Tools like Cadmium AI are now being used to automatically color 2D animation, applying consistent palettes and shading across entire scenes. This technology not only cuts production time but also enables studios to rapidly A/B test different color styles to see what resonates with specific audiences.

Beyond coloring, AI is being integrated throughout the 2D animation pipeline to accelerate workflows. Generative AI tools like Midjourney and DALL-E are used to create initial character concepts and storyboards, allowing for rapid iteration before committing to a design. For animatics, AI can analyze a script to automatically break it into scenes and generate timed storyboards with camera directions. Studios are validating new IP on platforms like YouTube and TikTok to gauge audience interest before investing in full-scale production. Success on these platforms, like the rise of "CoComelon," signals to streamers that a built-in audience exists. Netflix, for example, frequently acquires IP that has already proven popular on YouTube. Between the first half of 2021 and 2025, major US commissioners ordered over 400 seasons of kids' shows based on existing franchises, underscoring the value of proven brands. Strategic buyers, particularly toy companies, are acquiring animation studios to create content for their existing brands. Hasbro acquired Boulder Media, and MGA Entertainment bought Pixel Zoo Animation, forming MGA Studios with a backing of over half a billion dollars to turn its toy lines into media franchises. Acquirers look for studios with strong IP and the ability to create a "transmedia franchise" spanning entertainment, gaming, and online experiences. Parents are increasingly concerned about their children's digital consumption, with a growing focus on "digital wellness." Shared TV watching has become the top family co-activity, rising from 21% in 2021 to 28% in 2025. There's also a rising parental emphasis on creativity, which has overtaken social skills as the top developmental priority for toddlers. Apple's Vision Pro introduces spatial computing, which could reshape kids' entertainment by blending digital content with the physical world. This technology opens possibilities for immersive educational experiences, like virtual science labs or historical site tours, and interactive, 3D storytelling that adapts to a user's environment. For developers, existing frameworks like SwiftUI are being adapted for spatial computing, lowering the barrier to entry for creating these new experiences.
