Unlicensed EV Installs Pose Fire Risk

A local utility, Wellington North Power, is warning homeowners about the dangers of improper EV charger installations. The utility stresses that hiring a licensed electrical contractor is critical to prevent the risk of serious electrical fires, a key selling point for professional electricians.

While EV fires are statistically less common than gasoline vehicle fires, improper installation of home charging systems is a growing cause of electrical fires. Many incidents are not caused by the vehicle's battery but by faulty wiring, overloaded circuits, or the use of underrated, non-weather-resistant outlets. These installation errors can lead to overheating, arcing, and eventual ignition of surrounding materials. The National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 625 provides clear safety standards for installing Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE). Key requirements include a dedicated circuit for the charger, appropriate Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection, and specific mounting heights—at least 18 inches indoors and 24 inches outdoors. The code also mandates that the continuous load does not exceed 80% of the circuit's capacity to prevent overheating. In Minnesota, installing a Level 2 (240-volt) EV charger legally requires a licensed electrical contractor and a permit from the local jurisdiction. An unlicensed individual performing this work, even if supervised, must be registered with the Department of Labor and Industry and directly overseen by a licensed electrician employed by the same company. Homeowners attempting DIY installations often lack the knowledge of load calculations and proper breaker sizing, creating significant risk. Engaging in unlicensed electrical work in Minnesota carries substantial penalties. The Department of Labor and Industry can issue fines of up to $10,000 per violation and can order the work to be stopped. For an aspiring contractor, performing unlicensed work not only risks severe financial penalties but also jeopardizes future licensing eligibility and business reputation.
