SaaS Opportunity for 65M UPI Merchants

With over 65 million merchants now accepting UPI in India, a significant opportunity is emerging for SaaS companies to build workflow automation tools. The need goes beyond simple payment dashboards to include services like GST compliance and e-invoicing for small businesses.

The growth of UPI has created a massive ecosystem, with over 500 million users now transacting with 65 million merchants. This scale accounts for nearly 50% of global real-time payment volumes and 84% of all retail digital payments within India, establishing a vast, addressable market for new software services. Person-to-Merchant (P2M) transactions are the driving force of UPI's growth, comprising about 62% of total transaction volume as of May 2024. This surge in digital payments at kirana stores and micro-businesses highlights a shift in daily commerce, moving beyond simple peer-to-peer transfers. The average ticket size for these transactions is decreasing, indicating more frequent use for smaller, everyday purchases. For these small merchants, the primary challenge now extends beyond payment acceptance to complex operational tasks. GST-compliant billing, e-invoicing, and real-time inventory management are critical needs. SaaS products are classified as services under GST and typically attract an 18% rate, creating a compliance burden that many small businesses are ill-equipped to handle on their own. In response, a new category of "Kirana-tech" software is emerging from companies like Logic ERP, myBillBook, and MargBooks. These platforms offer all-in-one solutions that integrate fast billing, barcode-based stock management, automated tax reporting, and supplier management directly into the merchant's workflow. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is actively building on top of the existing payment rails to further support merchants. Initiatives include raising daily transaction limits for verified merchants to as high as ₹10 lakh for certain categories and developing features like "Tap & Pay" and recurring payment mandates. Looking ahead, the evolution of UPI will likely include embedded credit, biometric authentication, and chat-based payment journeys. The goal is to make digital transactions feel more natural and contextual, reducing friction for both the consumer and the merchant at the point of sale.
