Mexico Tacos Expands to Medford
Plazita Mexico Tacos is set to open a new location in Medford Square, marking the third outpost for the growing chain. Mexican cuisine ranks #3 globally in recent rankings, while Allston also welcomed Burrito Loco, tracing its heritage to a beloved Mexican-Salvadoran eatery in Somerville.
The new Medford outpost of Plazita Mexico Tacos will be located at 49 High Street in the space formerly occupied by Hot Chix Halal. This marks a rapid expansion for the brand, which was founded in 2023 by the husband-and-wife team of Miguel Sánchez Galeana and Caroline Stockbridge. Their first location opened in Wakefield, followed by a Watertown shop in late 2024. The restaurant's recipes are rooted in the Sánchez Galeana family's traditions from Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Plazita Mexico Tacos is particularly known for its birria, a flavorful stewed meat, which they serve in tacos, ramen, burritos, and quesadillas. The quality of their food has not gone unnoticed; the Boston Globe named their Watertown location as one of the 10 best taco spots in the Greater Boston area. The Medford eatery will feature a small dining area with approximately eight seats, with a primary focus on take-out orders. In addition to their popular birria, the menu includes oversized crispy sopes, weekend tamales, and house-made agua frescas. Co-owner Caroline Stockbridge also notes that their flan is a customer favorite. The arrival of Plazita Mexico Tacos adds to a dynamic restaurant scene in Medford Square. Recently, the neighborhood also welcomed Mrs. Murphy's Pub, an Irish pub from the owner of The Ford Tavern, which opened its doors in early 2025. Meanwhile, Burrito Loco in Allston is a continuation of a family's culinary legacy. The Morales Group, a team of four brothers, are carrying on the tradition of their parents, Luis and Blanca Morales, who opened the beloved Mexican-Salvadoran restaurant Taco Loco in Somerville in the early 1990s.
