San Diego's Black Culinary Tour
A San Diego native's curated food tour spotlighting Black culinary culture is gaining traction, featured in the Union-Tribune. The "Taste Black — San Diego Food Tour" was founded by San Diego native Bev Freeman. Her goal is to create a refined culinary journey that shines a light on the county's Black-owned and Black-chef-led dining establishments. The tour provides guests with transportation on a luxury party bus to 4-5 different restaurants. Each stop includes sample plates, and the overall experience features a champagne welcome toast and the chance to meet with the chefs and owners behind the establishments. This initiative is part of a larger movement to support and elevate Black-owned businesses in the area. According to the County of San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce, only 1.3% of local businesses are Black-owned, making community support a crucial factor for their success. The culinary landscape of Black-owned restaurants in San Diego is diverse, offering a range of cuisines. Options include Southern comfort food, authentic Ethiopian and Eritrean dishes at places like Muzita Abyssinian Bistro, and Caribbean flavors from restaurants serving Jamaican cuisine.
