Peak Rock Sells Geospatial Firm to Enverus

Peak Rock Capital has signed a definitive agreement to sell Spatial Business Systems (SBS) to Enverus, a company owned by Blackstone. Under Peak Rock's ownership, SBS more than quadrupled its annual recurring revenue and launched new AI-powered automation tools.

The acquisition of Spatial Business Systems (SBS) by Enverus aims to create a comprehensive platform for utility and energy infrastructure projects, connecting high-level planning and analytics with on-the-ground engineering execution. The deal will integrate Enverus's market intelligence and AI-driven analytics with SBS's specialized design automation tools. This combination is designed to provide an end-to-end operating system for managing the large-scale capital projects required to modernize the power grid. Under Peak Rock Capital's ownership, which began in October 2022, SBS underwent significant expansion, more than doubling its employee headcount. This period of growth was driven by investments in sales, marketing, and the development of new technology. The firm was successfully transitioned to a recurring subscription revenue model, a key factor in its growth. A central component of the deal is SBS's suite of AI-powered software, which includes tools like Automated Utility Design (AUD), Substation Design Suite (SDS), and Automated Broadband Designer (ABD). These platforms are engineered to streamline and automate complex engineering workflows for utilities, including the creation of engineering templates and bills of materials. For some users, these tools have been shown to reduce design cycle times by as much as 90%. The transaction positions Enverus to capitalize on an anticipated surge in utility infrastructure spending, which is projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2029 in the U.S. alone. This investment is driven by the need to upgrade aging infrastructure, integrate renewable energy sources, and meet growing electricity demand. SBS's customer base already includes more than 90% of the 25 largest investor-owned utilities in North America. The acquirer, Enverus, is a major player in energy data analytics, providing a SaaS platform that serves over 8,000 customers in 50 countries. Itself acquired by private equity giant Blackstone, Enverus has been strategically expanding its offerings for the power and renewables sector through both internal development and acquisitions like this one.
