Markham received his heart transplant at AdventHealth Orlando in 2021. He credits the transplant with giving him a second chance at life and the ability to pursue his dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail. Markham's hike is also aimed at raising awareness about the importance of organ donation. He hopes to inspire others to consider becoming donors and to support those who have received transplants. The Appalachian Trail spans approximately 2,190 miles from Georgia to Maine. Markham plans to complete the hike in about six months, averaging around 12 miles per day.
