Police Nurse Charged in Custody Death
A Thames Valley Police nurse, Sean Cregg, has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter and a health and safety offence related to a death in custody. The case is now proceeding through the court system.
- The man who died in custody was 38-year-old William Cameron, who passed away on January 8, 2020, after being taken to Loddon Valley police station near Reading. - Sean Cregg, the nurse charged in the case, was not a direct employee of Thames Valley Police but was working for Mountain Healthcare, a company that provided services to the police force. - The charges against Cregg followed an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) which concluded in March 2021 and referred the case to the Crown Prosecution Service. - In addition to the gross negligence manslaughter charge, Cregg is also charged with an offence under Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. - A police sergeant was also investigated in connection with William Cameron's death, but the Crown Prosecution Service determined that they will not face charges. - Specific allegations against Cregg include failing to act on his observations that Mr. Cameron was unfit for detention because he could not walk or talk, and not sending him to the hospital. - Cregg pleaded not guilty to the charges during an appearance at the Old Bailey, and a trial is scheduled to begin on October 1, 2026. - At the time of the initial investigation in February 2020, the IOPC was also investigating a police sergeant for gross negligence manslaughter, and a member of civilian staff and two arresting officers for gross misconduct or misconduct.
