The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) is an autonomous racing league with events in car, drone, and buggy racing, organized by ASPIRE, part of the UAE government's Advanced Technology Research Council. The first A2RL drone race occurred on April 11-12, 2025. A2RL also hosts AI vs AI and Human vs AI events, even holding one at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan. The A2RL Drone Championship on January 21–22, 2026, featured multiple competition formats and a $600,000 prize pool. Drones in the A2RL race autonomously using only a forward-facing camera and an inertial measurement unit, ensuring AI software drives performance gains. This setup intentionally mirrors the limited perception available to human pilots. In the AI Speed Challenge at the 2026 A2RL Drone Championship, TII Racing set the fastest autonomous lap at 12.032 seconds. World FPV Champion Minchan Kim narrowly won the Human vs AI Challenge. MAVLab secured the Multi-Drone Gold Race title, requiring real-time collision avoidance and trajectory planning. A2RL serves as a public testbed, compressing years of autonomous systems research into days by exposing AI systems to extreme conditions. Discussions at the A2RL events also cover scaling autonomy across logistics, emergency response, and future air mobility. A2RL also runs a Drone STEM Program in collaboration with UNICEF, training Emirati students in AI, robotics, and drone operations.
