England's Coast to Coast Gets National Trail Status

England's iconic Coast to Coast trail has just been designated as a National Trail, opening up 200 miles of wild landscapes and historic villages from St Bees in the west to Robin Hood's Bay in the east. This trail is now easier to navigate and more accessible than ever before. The designation makes it a bucket-list option for long-distance hikers seeking a well-supported adventure.

The route was originally devised by the celebrated fellwalker and author Alfred Wainwright in his 1973 book "A Coast to Coast Walk". For over 50 years, it has been an unofficial and mostly unsignposted trail, relying on walkers' own navigation and the goodwill of landowners. The upgrade to National Trail status is backed by a £5.6 million government investment. This funding is being used to improve path surfaces, replace stiles with more accessible gates, and install new signage and waymarking to clarify the route. The project, which formally began in November 2022, is scheduled for completion by the end of March 2026. Natural England is leading the upgrade, working in partnership with the Lake District, North York Moors, and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, as well as local councils. The project includes creating 9.7 miles of new public footpaths and 9 miles of new public bridleways to ensure the long-term sustainability of the trail. The Coast to Coast walk is a significant economic driver for the rural communities it passes through. Over 6,000 walkers complete the entire route each year, contributing an estimated £7 million to local economies. While much of the original route will be retained, some changes are being made to improve the experience and protect sensitive habitats. One ongoing challenge is the crossing of the busy A19 dual-carriageway, with a bid submitted for a £6m-£10m footbridge to ensure walker safety.
