OpenAI Quietly Alters Mission Statement

OpenAI has removed the word “safely” from its mission statement, which now focuses on ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. The change comes amid multiple lawsuits over AI product safety and follows recent structural changes to the company's governance, prompting questions about its shifting priorities toward commercial impact over risk mitigation.

- The mission statement has evolved multiple times since 2016. Initially, it included a commitment to being "unconstrained by a need to generate financial return" and to "openly share our plans and capabilities," phrases that were later removed in 2018 and 2024 respectively. - The previous mission statement, from the 2022 and 2023 IRS filings, was "to build general-purpose artificial intelligence (AI) that safely benefits humanity, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return." The 2024 filing changed it to "to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity." - This change follows an October 2025 corporate restructuring where OpenAI's for-profit arm became a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), controlled by the non-profit OpenAI Foundation. The Foundation holds 26% equity, Microsoft holds 27%, and employees and other investors hold the remaining 47%. - OpenAI faces at least eleven personal injury or wrongful death lawsuits. Several suits filed in November 2025 allege that the company knowingly released a "dangerously sycophantic and psychologically manipulative" product, GPT-4o, that contributed to suicides. - Co-founder Elon Musk filed a lawsuit in February 2024, alleging the company's partnership with Microsoft betrayed its founding commitment to benefit humanity over profit. OpenAI has countersued, claiming Musk's lawsuit is an "incoherent" and "frivolous" attempt to slow its progress. - Coinciding with the mission statement update, OpenAI reportedly disbanded its "mission alignment" team, a group focused on ensuring the company's activities aligned with its stated goals.
