OpenAI has removed the word “safely” from its mission statement, which now focuses on ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. The change comes amid multiple lawsuits over AI product safety and follows recent structural changes to the company's governance, prompting questions about its shifting priorities toward commercial impact over risk mitigation.

Initially, it included a commitment to being "unconstrained by a need to generate financial return" and to "openly share our plans and capabilities," phrases that were later removed in 2018 and 2024 respectively. - The previous mission statement, from the 2022 and 2023 IRS filings, was "to build general-purpose artificial intelligence (AI) that safely benefits humanity, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return."
